Scope:
In 2022, Timeboy had the unique opportunity to create a projection mapping installation for the Jean-Michel Basquiat Foundation during the "King Pleasure" exhibition in Manhattan. This event, titled "Liminal Space," showcased Timeboy’s innovative approach to visual storytelling through the medium of projection mapping on the iconic Basquiat Opal mural.
The evening featured four distinct acts, each with a unique visual theme reflecting the evolution of visual art over the past four decades. Beginning with analog video feedback and circuit bending techniques from the 1970s, Timeboy transitioned into the digital art movements of the 1990s, including glitch art and generative digital designs. The narrative progressed into the 2000s with advanced generative art, culminating in a groundbreaking display using a large language model trained on thousands of Basquiat’s works to create dynamic, evolving visuals.
The finale was a special ten-minute projection-mapped encore set to an unreleased track by Flying Lotus, intertwined with a video that created the illusion of Basquiat himself painting the mural. The installation not only paid homage to Basquiat's legacy but also pushed the boundaries of how art can be experienced.
The event was a resounding success, deeply appreciated by Basquiat’s family and attendees, marking Timeboy as the first visual artist to collaborate at this level with the Basquiat estate, an honor that reflects a profound, almost spiritual connection with the artist’s work.
