Scope:
In 2016, Timeboy spearheaded the stage design for Hiatus Kaiyote's show at the Sydney Opera House, employing innovative technologies to enhance the visual spectacle. Fascinated by the potential of low-lying fog and haze, he used these elements to create luminous walls that visually segmented the performers and colorfully represented each musical instrument. This approach faced unique challenges, particularly due to the necessity for indoor venues and the behavior of haze in varying temperatures—issues Timeboy addressed by experimenting with dry ice-based haze machines to maintain the desired effect on stage.
Aligning the visuals with Hiatus Kaiyote's musical and thematic elements, Timeboy adopted a synesthetic approach where colors and lights translated auditory sensations, ensuring a seamless blend of sight and sound. A standout innovation for their 2022 stage was a reflective wall made from acrylic panels adorned with small circular mirrors, akin to sequins. This design created dramatic visual effects, with each mirror rippling like water as fans positioned behind the stage directed airflows, enhancing the dynamic, fluid aesthetic that mirrored the band’s eclectic rhythms.
